I finished this painting during a heavy week in the world. The news was filled with turmoil and divisiveness-with earthquakes, hurricanes, the ever-present pandemic and the evacuation of Afghanistan. So many of us were feeling the weight of it all. It was cathartic to do something with my hands and just paint. At one point, the painting started looking like the earth from a distance. Land and sea. Up close, waters swirling, waves swelling, but from a distance, it all appears much more peaceful. I started thinking about how the water doesn't stay in one area—it laps onto shores all around the world. From one nation to another. It runs through every continent, makes up our own bodies, and gives life to us all. A truly uniting force, and a reminder we are more similar than we sometimes realize.
