On a drive down to Sunriver this summer, I was looking out the window and noticing all of the burned trees, acre after acre, and realizing how massively devastating the recent fires had been. It was so sad to see all that had been lost. I couldn’t help but notice though, at the base of the barren tree trunks were thick grasses new ferns. I wondered how long it would take for the young, thin trees to grow tall and strong again, and pictured how someday, it’ll look as though the fires had never been there. Nature is miraculous that way. It never ends with the devastation, it always cycles back to new life.

Around this time I reached out to my Instagram community and asked them what they saw in the abstraction of these paintings, and many were seeing what I was as well. Smokey, glowy skies, like those after a fire, rising over a silhouette of evergreens..

I don’t always search for an image or something literal to cling to in an abstract piece, but I couldn’t ignore how strong the resemblance was, so I used this road trip memory to help me name the piece.

I hope it stands as a reminder of the beauty that will come after the hard—that amid darkness there is hope, and that devastation can still bring new life.

The glow from the embers promised new growth

This diptych (2-panel painting) was the main piece of all that I did for this 2023 Street of Dreams home. Each panel is 34” x 60” and the painting is continuous across the panels, so they can be displayed inches apart, or several feet apart.  The wood panels and the custom float frames were all built by a local craftsman, and there is a built-in cleat so the panels hang level and nice and flush to the wall.
